Poetry is a way to capture the heart of someone else, to put your hopes and dreams and thoughts and innermost feelings down on paper. Poetry has the power to touch people's lives, to make them sit and think. That is what poetry is all about. Making people feel. But I have come to the realization that poetry is not just people pouring out their thoughts on paper for others to read. Poetry allows us to see through other people's eyes, to live their experiences and learn from them. Poets do not just record thoughts from themselves; they write down the life stories of people around them. The life stories of people all alone, without their loves; daughters realizing that yes, momma was right; and people learning that memories are more painful than physical wounds. That is what this work will do: tell stories that touch our lives.
